Eli Reed (born 1946) is an American photographer and photojournalist, and was raised in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He studied Pictorial Illustration at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts (1965-1969) and later became a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University (1982-1983). As far as any specific formal training in photography, Reed claims to be self-taught, but attributes part of his education to a wonderful mentor Donald Greenhaus.
He became a freelance photographer in 1970, and after seeing his work from El Salvador, Guatemala and other Central American countries he attracted the attention of Magnum Photos in 1982. He was nominated to the agency and became a full member in 1988.
Reed started making photographs of films and actors in 1992 and is also a member of Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers (SMPSP).
